Everyone keeps on asking me…Jacob, how do you crush it so hard on Squidoo? Well here is a quick outline of how I get shit done.
For starters, the domain authority of Squidoo is sick. According to SEOmoz’s open site explorer, Squidoo’s homepage has 685,000 indexed links with a domain authority of 98.
See for yourself – opensiteexplorer.org
Now do these stats mean that you can just crush any ranking with a Squidoo lens?
No, it is not that simple, but it does mean you can potentially leverage this authority and use it as an advantage over other domains.
My recipe for success on Squidoo is relatively simple, here is the general outline.
Phase 1. Research
Phase 2. Page Creation
Phase 3. Promotion and Link Building
Phase 4. Updates and Conversion Optimization
The key is developing a replicable, scalable process that works for you. Once you get this process down, it’s just a matter of repeating it over and over again.
More about the why before the how…
Over the last 4 months studying Google’s behavior towards Squidoo lenses has been quite interesting. For one, it’s a lot less stressful than managing SEO campaigns for multiple sites.
If a Squidoo lens gets penalized, then in classic Honey Badger fashion, you really don’t give a shit. The impact is only on one single page, not site wide.
When utilized correctly, it’s a great tool to help diversify your portfolio of affiliate web assets. In a recent post I went over some reasons why I am currently using Squidoo to crush affiliate sales after penguin. Take a look and be sure to keep that information in mind.
So here is my process broken down (a much more detailed 4 part guide will be coming soon)
Phase 1. Research
In my opinion, this is by far the most important part of any SEO campaign. When it comes to making Squidoo lenses, this is no different. The process in which you do keyword research will determine the potential earnings of the page you create and the necessary resources required to achieve those earnings.
Hitting the sweet spot with your keyword research is the golden ticket, then the beauty of Squidoo’s domain really comes into play.
Often times I will find such low competition keywords that they will rank in the top 3 results with ZERO promotion. Its disgusting. See my post on doing keyword research with web 2.0 style, this is the exact method I use to identify keywords that crush.
Phase 2. Page Creation
My least favorite part of the process. This is where you need to create a freakin awesome Squidoo page. It keeps coming up over and over; the importance of user engagement, blah, blah blah. Just create baller content and you won’t have to worry about it.
Big Point: To Succeed You Must Differentiate Your Lenses From All The SPAM Out There
Take into consideration the search volume and profitability of the keyword when you make lenses. If the keyword is a $20 a month amazon keyword, then you don’t need to write a masterpiece. If it’s a $10,000 a month cash cow, treat it accordingly.
You don’t want to be spending 20 hours (and or money) building links to a page that you took 20 minutes to write. Trust me, you don’t want to be that SEO douche.
Phase 3: Link Building and Promotion
Sorry but King’s Long Island BBQ can’t be giving away their secret sauce, and neither should you.
Your research process and promotion process are the two phases of this income generation method that will set you apart from all the other affiliates. They’re out there waiting for you to take their money. Are you going to take it? Are you man enough to take it?
Here is probably the single best tip you will find:
Read and Pay Attention to Other Lensmasters That Are Making Money!!
If you’d like to become a “save the manatees” lensmaster, then follow the many out there and take their advice. If you want to become a beast, see whats working for the beasts.
Read all of the good pages on Squidoo link building, many Squidooers are bored like me and share all kinds of great information. Analyze what they are doing to bump their pages up in the SERPs, take their techniques, modify them, apply them, create your own process, and BOOM!
Phase 4: Updates and Conversion Optimization
**Breaking News Flash** This just in, Google likes regularly updated pages!
This is one of the big reasons why Google tends to favor so many Squidoo pages. Because they are frequently updated unlike most other sites competing in the search results.
So use this to your advantage! Update your pages often by improving/adding content and making changes to increase conversion rate (its a win, win, duh). Simply going to a lens, changing a few sentences, and adding a poll module can be a substantial change. Do it often and you will see it reflected in your rankings.
Making money ranking Squidoos is by no means a short term operation. A big part of the reason why I am doing so well with my method is because I make pages almost daily. Yes, the age of your lens has a big impact.
Keeping in mind that age plays a big factor, this is why I’m constantly rolling out new pages. As a substantial portfolio builds up, older lenses will start coming to fruition.
Personally, I build about 5 new lenses per week with a basic round of promotion. Then after a few months go by pages tend to pop up in the ranks like little ripe tomatoes, especially if you are updating the page and getting Google to have a higher crawl frequency.
It’s similar to planting a bunch of seeds or mining for gold in multiple places. We’re increasing the chance of winning by rolling dice more times.
Man you should see the look on a car dealers face when they ask you how you’re going to pay for a new car and you respond “cash money baby”. Especially when you haven’t shaved for a month and are looking quite disheveled. Think I’m bullshitting?
