Scraped Domains are Bullshit (Most of the Time)

scraped-domains-blowYup you read right, I have some bad news for you today. Scraped domains for the most part, are complete bullshit and likely been spammed with before. So you’ve probably seen all these domain scraper services popping up over the last year, right about when this method had been pumped to the absolute maximum, shocker. Before diving deeper into this, let’s broadly cover expired domain scraping for the uninitiated.

Heard of broken link building? Well it’s kind of similar, only we definitely aren’t contacting any webmasters to inform them of the broken links. Quite opposite actually, we’re checking those dead links for any potential domains that can be registered, rebuilt, and then sneakily linked to your money site. This in a nut shell is what people typically do with “scraped domains”, using a tool like Scrapebox or Gscraper, we pull outbound links from authority sites and try to find some honey.

Well there are some big problems here, for starters you’ve got big time spammers that have used this method YEARS ago and have pillaged every authority domain, gov and edu page in all the obvious places. Then Johnny SEO comes along thinking he just cracked the algo with this hot new method and finds a few decent looking domains. Little does Johnny know these domains have already been registered and used for some totally filthy spam. Clean backlink profile and all but this domain was already used for a PBN and then let expire…

Archive.org to the rescue, what an amazing free tool to have as an SEO. Alright so most of you probably already know to taker that step, if you don’t I’m sorry but you’ve been registering like 50%+ spammed out shit.

Shameless plug, for members of my forum I’ve been pointing this out for years ;-)

Ok well there is still the other 50% of domains, aren’t those good? Maybe, a Unicorn also might come crashing through the wall in my apartment. It’s like finding a needle in a haystack, the same haystack that a million other douche bags are searching through. Now knowing that, how easy do you think it’s going to be to build a 20+ domain PBN with scraped domains? 30+? 40+? Not going to happen, unless half of them are spam or the domains are all weak as fuck.

But then I’ve got all these services I’m getting emails about, could it be, some good old fashioned snake oil? I’m not even going to link them up, just search “scraped domains” and you’ll see a shitload if you’d like.

Do you really think any of the people building and selling these tools have actually ranked a site using scraped domains? I highly, highly doubt it. Yeah sure, after discovering the secret honey hole for good links by scraping domains, better get to market with a tool for all the competition! Yeah that’s how you get to the riches!!

van-damme

And if they were ranking, don’t you think they’ve scraped the shit out of all the good authority sites and kept all the good shit for themselves? I know what I did when I first discovered this technique, I hunkered down and tried to scrape as many semi niche relevant domains as I possibly could before somebody else did. I’ve written a detailed tutorial on the method in my forum but I’ve also showed some case studies where the results were by no means spectacular from placing links on 5 scraped domains in a case and 10 domains in another. This after absolutely busting my balls to find the domains, just better stuff to be working on these days IMO. Not to completely discount the method since it can have more niche specific applications or maybe you’re trying to use them for money sites or 301s. Either way, you should have realistic expectations when it comes to the results from using this method.

So what blackhat link building do you recommend? Pbns dont work, tier shit don’t work. Only good old white hat links left it seems.

Good PBN works with good domains, not some spammed out bullshit. You really gotta go the extra mile with PBN now days imo, can’t just toss up some mediocre shit. Good PBNs work great.

Good ole white hat links are good too, not going to hate. Just get super gangster with shit so you can put those tactics on steroids vs just publish and pray.

Combine that with some high quality PBN and hey maybe a nice niche relevant expired domain with beastly links. Magic might just happen ;-)

Cool post bro! I also recently found that scraping domains is a pretty pointless exercise in wasting a whole bunch of time for little to no reward. I have found a few decent ones that weren’t absolute shit by Chinese spammer assholes, but they took way too much time to find that it wasn’t worth it in the end anyway. I’ve used a few of the tools, which are again too time consuming.

I’m still new to PBN’s but having some pretty good success with it so far. I bought a domain from a reseller who told me it was from an auction, I am about to look into that soon instead of going through middlemen. Do you have any advice on that?

    Cheers bro

Decent, maybe for low comp. Mid to high going to need more, more diversity and more power. Just a PBN blast from sellers will give you some blog post style links only and roll off the homepage quickly especially if it’s a service.

As someone with 9k domains (a large # of which are expired) targetting longtail, high cpc loan keywords : There is literally no telling how a domain will perform. Sometimes a spammy viagra .info expired will do better than something relevant you bought at an auction.

Leads me to believe that all ‘domain metrics’ are a piece of piss. There is literally no telling what’s going on in google’s fannybox.

Pretty much true, casino poker niche expired domains perform way better than the simple scraped so called clean domains, I am also tempted to believe this theory is correct Jacob

Throw enough shit at the wall and something will stick I suppose. If a domain has legit links, clean history, and it’s relevant?! Then no way that some spammed out viagra piece of shit is going to beat that out. Unless the domain has some issue that I missed.

4k+ domains in loan niche here, expired. It can go 95% but you need some tf 50+ to really take you over the edge on the big kw.

    Hey Jacob,

I’ve started using backorder and auction services to get domains. I wonder if you have anything to say on WHOIS/registrar footprints. Am I better off transferring out my domains or am I safe with having all my domains registered with backorder services? Planned network size is about 50-100 domains. I don’t give a shit about manual reviews, just want to avoid algo problems.

    Thanks
